The Bureau acts as the Secretariat of the Pakistan Information Technology Forum,
which is an organization representing computer installation, users, equipment
suppliers, universities and other organizations concerned with I.T. usage both
in the government as well as private sector. The Forum provides a platform for
discussion on matters of common interest to the profession. The decisions/
recommendations of Forum are passed on to the concerned agencies for implementation.
The Bureau successfully organized National Computer Conferences in 1981, 1986, 1991,
and 1997. The Survey of Computer Facilities in Pakistan in conducted regularly and
valuable information about mainframe and mini computers installations is published
which is extensively used by the policy makers as well as the suppliers and users.
An information Bulletin which includes short technical articles, I.T. news and
abstracts of papers is also published.
The Bureau liaises with international organizations concerned with computers and
informatics. It cooperates with regional and international agencies like UNESCO,
ESCAP, APDC, IIP, Center for International Cooperation in Computers (CICC), and
Asian Productivity Organization for exchange of experts and information. A number
of seminars/workshops have been organized in the past in which experts from other
countries/ international organizations delivered lectures and imparted training in I.T. field.
The Bureau is the national focal point for Regional informatics governmental informatics
programme sponsored by UNESCO. The Bureau has in the past organized a number or international
courses with the assistance of International Agencies inviting participants from countries
of the region.
