E-Government is one of the major initiatives
under the present IT policy and Action Plan. To pursue this initiative,
the Government of Pakistan is undertaking a large number of projects
in different areas. The mandate of the Pakistan Computer Bureau (PCB)
is to work in the area of E-Government, undertake training of government
officers and staff, help in the development, operation and maintenance
of IT Systems in government Departments, evaluation of feasibilities
and provide consultation in this regard. The PCB is performing E-Government
activities since 1970 and its major thrust has been in the above areas.
Lately, it has been assigned an additional role of assisting the IT
& T Division in implementing the IT Policy initiatives in the areas
of E-Government. Under the new responsibility, the PCB is required
to work in several different area varying from the training of Government
Officers and Staff and the Private sector in the System Administration
and Networking, of Linux Operating System, Windows Operating System,
Office Applications, preparation & maintenance of Web Sites, development
of databases and workflow applications, maintenance and up keep of
computer equipment, hardware etc.
